horseback riding kettle moraineOne of the best ways to see the Kettle Moraine South Unit Forest is on a western saddle horseback riding. You and your horse are walking along the worn trail, it’s a John Wayne classic in the making. All you need to do is practice your “cowboy talk”.

Cowboy hats are optional, and ball hats are welcome. The one thing we do want is that children either wear a bicycle helmet or riding helmet while horseback riding.

Kettle Moraine Trail Ride Scenery

As we ride into a near-by forest, the trail becomes steeper and the tree’s close in, leaving a passage that climbs between pine tree walls. The terrain becomes smooth and resembles a fire road. Huge trees block the view around the winding path. Wild turkeys and their young can be seen sometimes in the brush. Don’t be surprised if the odd deer jumps out onto the path. You’ll want to keep an eye out for wildlife. It occurs to you that you are, indeed, Way out West.

Eagle Trail Ride Scenery

eagle horseback ride kettle moraineIn the year 1836, while Thomas Sugden, John Coats and a Mr. Garton were prospecting, they came to a beautiful prairie about one and a half by two and a half miles in area. Here, hovering and curving over a large mound, near the present residence of Ebenezer Thomas, was a monster bald headed eagle. From this incident and time, the prairie and Town were called Eagle.

As we ride into a near-by forest towards the town of Eagle , the trail becomes steeper and the tree’s close in, leaving a passage that climbs between pine tree walls. The terrain becomes somewhat rocky and resembles an old  fire road. Huge trees block the view around the winding path. Wild turkeys and their young can be seen sometimes in the brush. Don’t be surprised if the odd deer jumps out onto the path. You’ll want to keep an eye out for wildlife. It occurs to you that you are, indeed, Way out West.

As you cross the railroad tracks and County Road S, this is how the Midwest must have appeared to its original inhabitants, to early explorers, and to 19th Century settlers. Seeing this countryside from horseback adds to the feeling that you have slipped back in time.

Soon you while come to the edge of Highway 59 where you will follow the trail into the town of Eagle.  There is even a corral to tie up your horse up in.  As we have something to eat or drink in the local saloon known as “Suhmer’s Saloon”, we can share stories of what the horseback ride experience has been like.

After eating you will be back on the Eagle trail, heading back to the  parking lot. If you are like many of our guests, you’ll find it hard to say good-bye to this beautiful country, to your guide, and, perhaps most of all, to the horse with whom you shared a unique experience.

This ride may not be for everyone. But if you have a spirit of adventure and the desire and stamina to challenge yourself with the 3 Hr. Eagle ride, then Dream A Horse is waiting for you.
